Lacrosse team loses club pioneers
By BRYCE NIEMAN
Keller lost to Colleyville Heritage 11-2 in the semifinals of the North Division III playoffs last weekend at Dallas Hillcrest’s Franklin Stadium, ending the high school careers of a group of seniors that were the pioneers of the club.
Several of them were charter members of the first KISD lacrosse team that was established three seasons ago.
"They were the original guys," Head Coach Curt Schumacher said. "The majority of them all played three years for me. They’re the ones that really established the program and got things going."
Schumacher said the seniors were good examples and leaders for the younger kids in the program.
The varsity team will be left with six underclassmen returning for next year, Schumacher said, which means the coaches will rely on the sub-varsity programs that have been put together over the past two seasons to field a complete varsity team.
As the current players have grown into the sport and learned more about it, this year’s varsity team put together its most successful campaign yet.
Keller got past Trinity in the first round of the newly devised Division III playoffs with a 19-4 blowout.
Schumacher said his team just kind of ran out of steam when it met Colleyville Heritage on Saturday.
"We played a hard game, it just wasn’t our day," Schumacher said. "I think we’re two evenly matched teams, but they just played better that day."
Colleyville lost to Wylie 12-8 in the Division III North championship Saturday.
All in all, it was another successful year for the program, the coach said, as it continues to move in the right direction.
"We did well this year," Schumacher said. "All the boys should be proud of themselves."
Though the roster will look very different next season, Schumacher said the entire coaching staff will return to keep up continuity.
"We’re looking forward to next year," Schumacher said. "We’ll have new challenges and new goals to set, and I think we’ll achieve those goals like we did this year."
Schumacher said the club is always looking to expand its numbers and get other kids involved. Partly because of that, the club is looking into starting an early registration so that it can accommodate as many athletes as possible.
