Yeck, Washington chosen for all-star game

Two Keller ISD football stars have been selected to take part in a state all-star game this summer.

Graduating Keller offensive lineman Michale Yeck and Fossil Ridge Class of ’08 defensive lineman R.J. Washington have both been named to the roster for the Texas High School Coaches Association All-Star Football game this July.

"I’m just really honored and excited to be able to represent the school," Yeck said.

Keller Head Football Coach Kevin Atkinson said the end-of-the-offseason all-star game has a prestigious reputation and has featured some of the state’s top talent in years’ past.

"It couldn’t happen to a better guy," Atkinson said. "He’s an excellent football player."

Yeck helped lead Keller to its first playoff appearance in three years last season to end his high school career.

"That was huge for us," Yeck said, "especially after two years of being so good. We just felt like the school deserved it."

Earlier this spring, Yeck signed a Letter of Intent to play for Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

Before he suits up for the Cougars, however, Yeck will spend two years away on his church mission. Getting to play one last game before being away from the sport for two seasons is another added benefit of the all-star game.

"I thought I was done playing for awhile," Yeck said. "I’m excited to get to play one more game before leaving for my mission trip."

Yeck said has already started to miss playing football for Keller, not getting ready for spring practice and working out with his teammates in the weight room.

Of everything he took away from his time at Keller, though, Yeck said he’ll most miss those bonds and friendships.

Playing in this summer’s all-star game will be one more chance for Yeck to represent Keller High and log some playing time before awaiting his college career to start.

Also playing in the game will be Washington, graduating Ridge defensive end.

Washington – who signed a Letter of Intent with Oklahoma this spring – also took part in the Army All-American Game at the first of the year.

The 2008 THSCA All-Star Football Game will be held on July 29 at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
