Tennis, track teams head to regionals

Qualifiers from all three Keller ISD high schools and tennis players from Keller High will be in action at regional championships this weekend.

Bids to the state championships are up for grabs as the top athletes from Region I of both Class 5A and 4A converge on their respective locations.

Five Indians tennis players will represent Keller and District 5-5A at the 5A Region I tennis tournament today and Saturday at Texas Tech’s McLeod Tennis Center.

Keller’s girls doubles team of Kaitlyn Blakey and Adriana Paret enter the tournament coming off their district title performance.

Emmi Mallow will be representing Keller in girls singles competition, while Matt Donaldson and Jeremy Knipp team up in the boys doubles division.

Each division features 16 doubles teams or individuals from across Region I, and they are seeded based on a coaches’ vote held Thursday evening. Seedings were not available at press time.

Keller and Central are sending 27 athletes combined to Lubbock for the 5A Region I track and field meet.

Field events begin at 9 a.m. both today and Saturday at Texas Tech’s R.P. Fuller Track, with running events beginning at 2:30 each day.

The District 6-4A champion boys and girls track and field teams from Fossil Ridge will send 19 athletes to Angelo State University in San Angelo for the 4A Region I today and Saturday.

Field events start at 1 p.m. today while action on the track is set to begin at 5 p.m. On Saturday, field events will begin at 11 a.m. with running events to follow at 4 p.m.

The top two finishers in each event of the track and field meets, and the top two finishers in each division of the tennis tournament earn bids to the state championships in Austin.
