Lacrosse team storms into semis
By BRYCE NIEMAN
Keller breezed through its first-round matchup against Trinity on Monday, winning 19-4 to advance to a semifinal matchup with Colleyville Heritage on Saturday.
This is the first season for a postseason tournament in the THSLL’s third division, and Keller is looking for a strong finish to its third season as a club team as it’s been awarded the playoffs’ third seed.
Heritage has the lead on the season series with KISD this year, winning 11-8 on March 8 and 13-6 on April 10. Keller did manage one win against Colleyville this season, however, and Keller coach Curt Schumacher said his team has to pick up a decisive second win on Saturday.
"We’re pretty equal teams," Schumacher said. "It depends on who shows up to play."
Schumacher said the team was shorthanded in a few of the previous matchups with Colleyville, and that combined with Heritage playing well swung things against Keller.
"Our bench wasn’t all that deep, but we’ll have everybody there for round two," Schumacher said.
Keller had no problems getting through the opening round of the playoffs. The team jumped out to a 4-0 lead on Trinity in the first quarter Monday at Indian Springs Middle School, before the Trojans got on the board.
KISD led 6-1 at the end of the opening period and doubled that to 12-2 by the end of the third quarter.
Trinity got two goals in the fourth quarter, but Keller piled on seven more goals of their own for a 19-4 final score.
Randy McMinn led the way offensively for Keller with six goals on the night and also assisted on three other scores.
Hunter Sahs, Carmelo Ortiz, Brandon Kaker and Greg Kiefer also each got multiple goals in the blowout.
Meanwhile, the Keller defense allowed the Trojans few offensive opportunities of their own. KISD goalkeeper Jamie Jansen only had to make six saves in the win, as Trinity only put three shots on goal for the entire first half.
Schumacher said he was happy with the way his team played Monday, but the squad was more looking forward to its semifinal matchup with Heritage and advancing to Sunday’s championship game.
"Hopefully we can take care of business and head to round three," Schumacher said.
Keller and Colleyville will meet at 6 p.m. Saturday. Loyola and Wylie will play in the other semifinal earlier in the day. The Division III championship game is scheduled for 1 p.m. Sunday.
All games are scheduled to be held at Franklin Stadium, 10000 Hillcrest Dr., Dallas.
