Chargers miss out on postseason bid
By SAMANTHA N. COOK
Tuesday’s loss gives Central a record of 5-8 in District 5-5A leaving Haltom, Grapevine and Colleyville Heritage to fight over the last two playoff berths with records of 7-6.
After losing to Haltom 3-1 last Friday night, the Chargers needed to win these next two games to have a chance at the playoffs.
Central Head Coach David Zeigler said it was all just a big disappointment.
"It hurts," he said. "They put in so much effort for the year, but we just hit a cold streak."
Zeigler stated he is most disappointed for the boys since many of them will be playing their last high school game this evening against Northwest.
There are eight seniors on the team and they will be leaving a few holes that need to be filled next year.
Centerfield, shortstop and catcher are the three positions coach will be looking to fill with his returning players next year.
In Tuesday night’s game, the Chargers were leading 5-3 up until the top of the seventh inning, when, after scoring one, the Rebels designated hitter hit a triple to bring in two runs and lead the game 6-5.
The Chargers were not able to score in the bottom of the seventh.
All Charger runs were scored in the third inning when they were able to capitalize on a bases loaded situation and a few missed cues by the Rebels.
Junior Blake Helm was the first to bat a RBI single with the bases loaded, and then junior Ryan Wysocki followed his lead with a RBI double.
Both Helm and Wysocki were able to steal a couple of bases and score themselves giving the Chargers a 5-0 lead.
Unfortunately, in the next four innings, they were only able to get on base four times while the Rebels played catch up.
Ziegler says he has not decided on his strategy for tonight’s season finale against Northwest.
The Texans enter the game in last place, so outcome of this evening’s game has no bearing on either Northwest or Central’s postseason fate.
"I may let the seniors play it out," he said, "or let the juniors play to build for next year. I haven’t really decided."
The Chargers wrap up their 2008 campaign at 7 tonight at Northwest.
