Local salsa-maker makes his mark – again

Kevin Blackwell’s Texas Lava salsa found success for the second straight year in the Fiery Food Challenge, sponsored by Chile Pepper magazine.

All three of his salsa varieties scored well in the fresh specialty salsa category, with his smoke taking first, and his verde and mild salsas taking third place. His salsa also took third in the people’s choice category. That follows up the previous year’s awards, which included first place specialty salsa with the verde flavor, third place for best fresh hot salsa with the smoke and first place in the people’s choice.

“It’s been a tough year financially, but somehow, some way the Lord continues to keep His plan of spreading the gospel of Christ on jars of salsa intact,” Blackwell said. “We still have the ‘got life’ message on each bottle.”

Blackwell returned to work after having taken time to focus on his salsa, which has affected the distribution of his salsa. It is still available at area Krogers, including both Keller stores.

“I still do everything myself,” he said. “Except, of course, we now have our salsa manufactured by Heritage Family Specialty Foods.” Even with mass production, he said, the salsa tastes just like he made it in his own kitchen.
